Designing for Size at Zazzle
By Nyxxie
Click, click, click. Human beings are very visual; being on the internet is worse as you have to gain the viewer’s attention immediately or they will click away. This is why I worry when I design items for Zazzle. I worry because the display for complex artwork is pretty small, and on shirts it’s even harder to view. To give Zazzle credit, they do have some options to view the design closer: when hovering over the design the product zooms up; and the design can also be look at without the product by clicking on the “Design” option. But being somewhat of a perfectionist, that isn’t enough for me. Will the viewer stay long enough to hover and look for other options? Maybe I am overly cautious. But this question does run through my mind every time I upload a design. The only solution I can come up with is to design the image, complex or not, to look great at any size. I should spank my hand, because I know better. As a graphic designer this is the first thing I learned. So let’s get down to business. There are two easy ways of making sure your design looks great at any size. First, show bold and clear lines. I am not saying to ruin your image by making tons of bold lines everywhere, but there should be a clear distinction between different elements in your photo. When it’s reduced down to size you don’t want it to blend together or lose a lot of quality. Second, in your graphics program make sure that you either design the product zoomed out as far as possible or you regularly check to see how it looks like at a small size. When I work in Photoshop, I always have the “Navigator” tool out in the open. The Navigator gives a preview of the design you’re working on at a smaller size, this is perfect for making sure your artwork looks fine at a smaller size. Always make sure that you design for your customer especially on the internet and for Zazzle. Be thoroughly aware of the issues that they might encounter so you can put together a solution to overcome it. |
